The traditional view of evolution found cooperation to be difficult to understand and led to a reductionist gene centered view of evolution. However, complex systems are cooperative structural hierarchies. In this lecture we will revisit the classic paradoxes of competition and cooperation in evolutionary concepts and present new approaches toward a more complete synthesis of these concepts.
