Integrated Bioscience and Technology is

Integrated Bioscience and Technology is a newly born course in our doctoral program to achieve the development of new fields by integrating life science with chemistry, information science, and environmental science. In recent years, biotechnology has accomplished rapid growth and broad development not only in the original life science field but also in the interdisciplinary fields between life science and a variety of sciences. In response to this situation, Integrated Bioscience and Technology course was established in order to produce talented individuals who can develop new technology by integrating the knowledge of life science with those of chemistry, information science and environmental science. The staffs of the specialties of life science, chemistry, information science, and environmental science cooperate with each other to perform the research and education programs in the three fields, bio-molecular engineering, cellular bioengineering, and bio-system engineering as described below.



Bio-molecular engineering

This research field is focused on (1) application and de novo design of bio-molecular functions through the analysis of bio-molecules such as proteins and genomic information, (2) the creation of novel composite materials by means of the hybridization of bio-substances including natural polymers, and (3) the development of functional polymer materials through the investigations of structural design and properties. This field brings up talents who are able to perform both analysis and designing of proteins and have expertise of utilizing bio-molecules and related compounds.


Cellular bioengineering

This research field is focused on the application of cellular function to accomplish better human life and global environment. Research and development is performed pointing towards environmental remediation, utilization of biomass resources, application of regulatory mechanisms of enzyme production, environmental evaluation, environmental conservation, and genetic resources preservation. This field brings up talents who are able to contribute to realization of persistent sustainable society, and have broad views of science covering genome to ecology.


Bio-system engineering

This research field is a new research contributing to human welfare. The higher biological functions such as perception, information processing, and environmental adaptation are investigated for the application to engineering, and the developed technology is applicable to medicine, health science and welfare. This field brings up talents who are able to integrate biological functions with computer systems as well as to contribute to system construction and machine development in medical and welfare field.
